In most terrestrial animals, this is the front region of an animal's head, and it also turns out to be where the nose and mouth are located. face Appendage-AnimalBodyPart appendage An <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjn2pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">AnimalBodyPartType</a> and a specialization of both <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvzBHPJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ExternalAnatomicalPart</a> and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViAHJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">AnimalBodyPart</a>. <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViC-JwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Appendage_AnimalBodyPart</a> is the collection of all appendages of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViwMZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Animal</a>s. An appendage is a body part that is connected to, and extends from, an animal's <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkJjpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Torso</a> (or from another of the animal's appendages, such as a hand extending from an arm). Each appendage is used by the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViwMZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Animal</a> for one or more functions. Altogether, appendages serve a wide variety of functions, including locomotion, manipulation, sensing, fighting, scratching, heat dissipation, and balance. Most nerves are mixed, containing axons of both motor and sensory neurons.
