Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViU95wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Device_UserPowered</a> is an artifact deliberately designed to perform a particular function, and one which depends upon the physical efforts of the user to perform that function in part or in whole. A paradigm example would be a bicycle. However, the definition also leaves room for some counterintuitive cases -- for example, combs and forks also qualify as user-powered devices. Borderline cases would be devices which require effort on the part of the user to perform part of the function, but not all of it. For example, many gas-powered lawnmowers have to be pushed by hand, but use an internal combustion engine to impart the necessary velocity to the cutting surfaces. heater A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViUcpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PoweredDevice</a>. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVi-_pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">HeatingDevice</a> is a device whose primary function (see the predicate <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rv-lujZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">primaryFunction</a>) is to generate heat to raise the temperature of something else. The thing being heated might be in gaseous form (for example, the air in a room), in liquid form (for example, the water in a pool), or in solid form (for example, food in an oven). E.g., the instrument panel of a car or plane. Note: A device's control panel may be unattached from (and used to control) the rest of the device --- e.g., a TV remote control.
