Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViqfpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">FormalProductType</a> is a collection of products (i.e. a subcollection of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkFYpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Product</a> (q.v.)), all of which conform to the same standardized product specification (or "form"). In Western-style capitalistic markets, instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViqfpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">FormalProductType</a> are often associated with a particular brand name (and perhaps model), since competing providers of products design them to be distinctive. For example, the collection <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViyXpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">InternalCombustionEngine</a> is not an instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViqfpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">FormalProductType</a>, but a specific collection of engines manufactured by (e.g.) Mazda might be. On the service side, the collection <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViw4JwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">HairCuttingEvent</a> is not a formal product-type, but a subcollection of hair stylings for men (e.g. at a particular salon) might be. A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVib1JwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Specification</a>. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkF3ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ProductStandard</a> is a precise description applied to the instances of a particular instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjKkZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ProductType</a>. Manufacturers of that product type agree explicitly or in practice, or they may obey a government requirement, to make product designs following the specifications stated in the standard, so that products within the type will all have certain features in common. For example, telephones and television sets fulfil certain product standards. The resultant interchangeability allows compatibility with other devices and products, with public utilities, commercial trading expectations, and government purchasing requirements. ProductStandard product standard GeneralAutoMarketCategory An element of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVi84ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ProductTypeByMarketCategory</a>. Each element of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVi2YpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeneralAutoMarketCategory</a> is an automotive product typically sold in auto parts stores, e.g. spark plugs, gaskets, wrenches, fuzzy dice, etc. automotive product solid tangible artifact SolidTangibleArtifact A specialization of both <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkH_ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Artifact</a> and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjElJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">SolidTangibleThing</a> . The predicate <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjz5pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">includedItems</a> is used to identify the peripheral items that come with a particular packaged product. (<a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjz5pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">includedItems</a> FORM ITEM) means that the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjaApwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Individual</a> ITEM is one of the things that are included in the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjuvpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PackagedProduct</a> FORM, along with its <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVi-qJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">mainProduct</a>; but ITEM is not the main product itself. A specialty store might be devoted to a single element of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVi84ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ProductTypeByMarketCategory</a>. The basis for a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVi84ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ProductTypeByMarketCategory</a> includes both (1) different brands or variations of a certain kind of product (e.g., hosiery or hammers); and (2) products that are often used together (e.g., kitchen pans and cooking utensils). Thus, members of a single market category collection need not have any intrinsic similarity; they may simply be things that are often used or purchased together. For example, work gloves, a soft clothing item, are usually found with hardware or gardening tools.
