These terms are not guaranteed to refer to the same concept across time but are guaranteed to be consistent within a particular OWL export. Use 'cycAnnot:externalID' for unambiguously referring to a concept across OWL exports or across Cyc inference engines. geographical region GeographicalRegion A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwLjlAJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalThing</a> and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkDZZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">SurfaceRegion_Tangible</a>. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a> is a tangible spatial region that includes some piece of the surface of a planet (usually <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkL_pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PlanetEarth</a>), and may be represented on a map of the planet. This includes purely topographical regions like mountains and underwater spaces, places defined by demographics (e.g. language areas) and territory otherwise demarcated (e.g. <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwPvi0JwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">TimeZone</a>s). In "dualist" geopolitical contexts (see <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvnCA15wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">DualistGeopoliticalMt</a>, instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjl2pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeopoliticalEntity</a> are also considered to be instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a>. In all cases the region in question must contain some tangible component with which it is possible to make physical contact. The instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a> contrast in this respect with the instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvc-YsJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalThing_Intangible</a>, which are wholly intangible. The mobility corridor is relatively free of obstacles and allows military forces to capitalize on the principles of mass and speed. The entire area, including land area and man-made structures, where boats dock and water traffic is handled. A single seaport contains at least one instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4r09gVMi_gEdyAAAACs6hRXg" class="cyc_term">PortFacility</a>. Developed seaports in industrial countries are typically under the jurisdiction of the port authority of the city in which the seaport is located. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvx0OwZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Resort_Attraction</a> is a place which draws visitors, typically vacationers who stay there for one or more nights. PostalCodeRegion postal code region ConcealmentFromAerialDetection-Excellent The collection of instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a> that have a sufficient amount of canopy closure (75-100 percent) or roof coverage (over 40 percent) to provide excellent concealment from aerial detection (0-25 percent). Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjQsJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Ground</a> is a land surface of a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwR7UWZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PlanetaryBody</a>. Ground GeographicalAgent geographical agent A specialization of both <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvZGAFpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">MultiIndividualAgent</a> and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwLjlAJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalThing</a>. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwTccApwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalAgent</a> is a group of people and/or organizations cohesive enough to be treated as an agent (see the collection <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViAB5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Agent_PartiallyTangible</a>, of which <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwTccApwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalAgent</a> is also a specialization), and which occupies a particular instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a>. Important specializations of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwTccApwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalAgent</a> include <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjl2pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeopoliticalEntity</a>, <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjjvpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">University</a>, and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVi4_pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Neighborhood</a>. Note that instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwTccApwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalAgent</a> are viewed in two significantly different ways with respect to two different types of geography-related microtheories. In a "physical" geography microtheory (i.e. <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvydXJJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhysicalGeographyMt</a> and its submicrotheories), geographical agents are clearly distinguished from the regions they occupy. (<a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvYkdfpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">TerritoryFn</a> GEO-AGENT) is used in these contexts to denote the land mass (an instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a>) occupied by a given geographical agent GEO-AGENT. In a "dualist" geography microtheory (i.e. <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvnCA15wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">DualistGeopoliticalMt</a> and its submicrotheories), on the other hand, geographical agents are viewed as being both agents and land masses (instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a>). Thus, there is little need for <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvYkdfpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">TerritoryFn</a> in the latter sort of context. (Despite their somewhat paradoxical flavor, dualist microtheories arguably allow Cyc to mimic commonsense reasoning about geographical agents and regions more closely than do the stricter physical microtheories.) There are also some "generic" geography microtheories (e.g. <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rv6rAIJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">WorldGeographyMt</a> and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvr3x_5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">UnitedStatesGeographyMt</a>) which are neutral with respect to the physical and dualist views. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rv2PyT5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ExtraterritorialRegion</a> is a geographical region located within the boundaries of one country but administered by officials of a foreign country. Most commonly, extraterritoriality is extended to the grounds of diplomatic missions, including the living quarters of ambassadors. In some cases, it has been extended to larger areas, as to the former European concessions in Shanghai that were granted by the Treaty of Nanking. Authorities of the surrounding country cannot enter or search within an extraterritorial region without permission from the foreign authorities who administer that region (generally, the head of the diplomatic mission). ExtraterritorialRegion RefugeeCamp refugee camp area of operations An operational area defined by the joint force commander for land and naval forces. Areas of operation do not typically encompass the entire operational area of the joint force commander, but should be large enough for component commanders to accomplish their missions and protect their forces. (Army) - A geographical area, usually defined by lateral, forward, and rear boundaries assigned to a commander, by a higher commander, in which he has responsibility and the authority to conduct military operations. AreaOfOperations ventilation shaft The collection of all more-or-less vertical passages through which harmful gases can ventilate out of (or outside air into) a relatively enclosed space. VentilationShaft infiltration lane InfiltrationLane Region through which forces may be infiltrated, in small groups or individually, at extended or irredular intervals, avoiding contact with the enemy. FM 101-5-1. geographical region which isn't { neighbourhoods, cities } (SubcollectionDisjointWithFn GeographicalRegion (TheSet Neighborhood City)) ModeratelyWellDrainedRegion moderately well drained A specialization <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a>. Instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rCaiPenTAEdaAAACgyZzFrg" class="cyc_term">ModeratelyWellDrainedRegion</a> are regions where water moves through the soil slowly during some periods of the year. Internal free-water commonly is moderately deep and may be transitory or permanent. The soil is wet for only a short time within the rooting depth during the growing season. The soil commonly has a moderately low, or lower, saturated hydraulic conductivity within one meter of the surface, or periodically receives high rainfall, or both. Sounding ManeuverFacilitatingTerrain maneuver facilitating terrain The collection of geographical regions that offer relatively good grounds for maneuvering within a specific context. Instances are instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a> represented as being bounded on at least some of its sides by <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvvdQpZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhaseLine</a>s in a military Course Of Action Sketch. <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwLRcBpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhaseLineBoundedArea</a>s ordinarily are of high military significance within the planning context, and are typically assigned to individual units as areas of responsibility (see also #$sectorOfResponsibility). phase line bounded area PhaseLineBoundedArea A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a>. Each instance of the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVj2hZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalHemisphere</a> is a hemisphere that is the surface of a planet. hemisphere GeographicalHemisphere civil administrative region CivilAdministrativeRegion Geographical artifacts or regions administrated by civil government authorities, often for specific land-use purposes. Examples include civil government facilities, national parks, and . Also includes complex entities such as townships, municipalities, counties, cities, etc. It does not include military facilities, nor law enforcement facilities. concession area ConcessionArea A lease of land by a government for economic development, eg mining, forestry. The collection of geographical regions that provide little or no concealment to an agent within a specific context. concealment-limiting terrain ConcealmentLimitingTerrain HillyRegion A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a>. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rHp68XHS_EdaAAACgyZzFrg" class="cyc_term">HillyRegion</a> is a region consisting of many hills (not flat, not mountainous). Instances have both up and down grades. hilly terrain mobility limiting terrain MobilityLimitingTerrain The collection of geographical regions that are relatively difficult for an agent to traverse within a specific context. soft terrain SoftTerrain A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViACZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GeographicalRegion</a>. CoverLimitingTerrain The collection of geographical regions that provide little or no cover for an agent within a specific context. cover limiting terrain The collection of agricultural organizations that are running viticultural activities, a specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjmU5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">CropFarm</a>. Instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwPuyu5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Vineyard</a> are farms that are growing grapes [see <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVixlpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">GrapeVine</a>]. A domain operated by a vineyard is an instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvjsm2ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ViticulturalDomain</a>. vineyard Vineyard ecological region EcologicalRegion A collection of geographical regions. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjKJ5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">EcologicalRegion</a> is a region having one or more characteristic ecosystems. From knowledge of those ecosystems, we can posit whether certain organisms can forage, reproduce, and live successfully there. Information about ecological regions typically also includes what kinds of organisms are in fact found there. In theory, any arbitrary continuous region could be analyzed as an ecological region, but most regions identified in practice have some kind of sameness or systematic interconnection in their topology, climate, and biology.
