Examples include the development of General Motors' business plan for 2003, an individual sales call on a particular customer, printing the 2003 Yellow Pages directory for the Los Angeles area, selling a newspaper, and designing and manufacturing a new memory chip. <p/> Though there is a great deal of overlap between this collection and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViHpJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">CommercialActivity</a>, they are not the same. Firstly, <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViMOJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">BusinessEvent</a> does not include any purely social or recreational events (whereas a weekend swap-meet, for example, would be an instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViHpJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">CommercialActivity</a>). Secondly, not all activities carried out in pursuit of business interests involve buying or selling (consider head-hunting, for example). Each instance is the use of language to perform some act. SpeechAct speech act judgement SelectingSomething A collection of events. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViG3JwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">SelectingSomething</a> is an event, perhaps an extended activity, during which something is selected. Selecting may be relatively simple or prolonged and complex; e.g., selecting an apple from a grocery store's produce counter, or choosing a general contractor to build a new courthouse. The selecting ends with a choice being made. A collection of events; a subcollection of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViN65wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">HumanActivity</a>. Typically, the purpose of the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVt07JwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">perpetrator</a> is to coerce other agents -- who have a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjo9pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">positiveVestedInterest</a> in the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rctAoGC02EdaAAACQJ5GoQA" class="cyc_term">hostages</a> -- to accede to some demand. StealingInformation <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwQXxkJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">StealingInformation</a> is a collection of events in which a person obtains information that she is not commonly considered to be legally entitled to possess. It includes stealing credit card numbers from the internet, learning personal identification numbers for ATM cards by spying on automatic teller machine users, and those forms of corporate espionage that involve acquiring trade secrets. information theft planning to kill PlanningAMurder This is the collection of acts in which a murder is planned. It is more general than <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4ru32qMDnkEdaGrQCgydoeiw" class="cyc_term">PlanningTheKilling</a>, which is the planning performed by the hitman. TerroristAct A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViD4ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">HostileSocialAction</a>. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViTlZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">TerroristAct</a> is an action which is performed with a political objective, and which is intended to be coercive through inducing terror (typically through the threat of future attacks). Historically, the perpetrators of terrorist acts have not considered military targets to be uniformly more legitimate than civilian targets. An important specialization is <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwFYGEpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">TerroristAttack</a>. terrorist act A football play in which defensive players attempt to break through the offensive line, usually in an attempt to tackle or pressure the quarterback before he can get rid of the ball. This can involve reading job advertisements, sending out resumes, going for interviews, and general schmoozing ('networking'). job hunt What a cashier does as a job: reads price tags, totals the prices of all purchases on a cash register, and receives payment for the purchases.
