An example would be the tearing of office files into tiny pieces by a machine designed for that purpose. Each instance is the act of dividing or partitioning something; separation by the creation of a boundary that divides or keeps apart. PartitioningSomething A collection of separation events in which something splits apart, often at a seam (e.g. in an item of clothing), perforation, or grain-line (e.g. in a piece of wood). That is, two areas of the thing are separated from one another (though perhaps not separated completely into discrete pieces or parts). Usually, a splitting occurs along a single "line" or "plane" that runs parallel to, and for a significant distance relative to, the length of the thing split. In each <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rJvxw-LjBEdmAAAACs6hRjg" class="cyc_term">Splintering_SeparationEvent</a>, something divides something else into slivers or splinters. slivering Generic ripping events, in which some tangible object is pulled apart in some way. Ripping ripping Separation-Incomplete This is the collection of events in which an object undergoes some sort of separation from itself, such as ripping or cutting, but the separation is not complete. In the end, there is still only one object. incomplete separation A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwQTcupwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhysicalContactMakingEvent</a> (q.v.). This collection includes all <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjpjZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhysicalEvent</a>s in which a "sharp" object (say a bullet, stinger, tooth or knife) penetrates the _outer_layer_ of a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVim7ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">BiologicalLivingObject</a> (in the case of an organism, this will often be its skin). Since this collection includes only the _penetration_ of the outer layer, instances will usually be <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViQmZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">subEvents</a> of, for example, stabbing or puncturing events. Common examples include an animal being scraped by a knife or thorn, a woodpecker penetrating the bark of a tree or a cell wall being penetrated.
