FindingAPhysicalObject finding an object WearAndTear The process of wear and tear that occur as a result of usage wear and tear Incorporation-Physical The collection of events in which an object or chunk of stuff comes to include, or acquire, or be joined to another object or chunk of stuff. If the additional object can be properly said to be a part of the entity into which it is incorporated, it is probably more appropriate to use <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwTvMaJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">AttachmentEvent</a> or one of its specs. GainingUserRights A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjpjZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhysicalEvent</a> and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwPG60pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">DangerousSituation</a>. <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rv3hz-pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">NaturalHazard</a> is the collection of natural hazard events, such as <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rGXdHdqdFQdeZyeu3p8B-2A" class="cyc_term">HurricaneAsEvent</a>, <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwKNzUJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Mudslide</a>s, <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwQBYpZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Earthquake</a>s and the like. Each instance of this collection is an event that can inflict extensive property damage, injury, or death. Instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rv3hz-pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">NaturalHazard</a> which actually cause significant damage are instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvfblKZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">NaturalDisaster</a>. If the hazards are caused by human action, they are not instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rv3hz-pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">NaturalHazard</a>. natural hazard NaturalHazard (MeaningInSystemFn SENSUS-Information1997 "NON-DIRECTED-ACTION") the concept corresponding to NON-DIRECTED-ACTION in SENSUS-Information1997 Infestation infestation The collection of infestations, events in which a large group of unwelcome animals, generally insects, congregates in a particular location. It is important in infestations that there be a fairly high density, in the sense of number of animals per area or volume. The proportion of volume taken up by the animals doesn't matter: a dozen elephants might virtually fill one's house, but the house is not thereby infested with elephants. military conflict MilitaryConflictEvent celestial event CelestialEvent The collection of events that involve heavenly bodies, which may or may not be observable from earth. Weathering A collection of events. In a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViG85wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Weathering</a> event, the physical state of an object is altered due to the action of weather, typically over some extended period of time such as years or decades or centuries or millenia. To undergo a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViG85wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Weathering</a> process, the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkIMZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">objectOfStateChange</a> must be outdoors (or at least exposed to the outdoor weather). The specific processes involved in a particular <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViG85wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Weathering</a> event depend upon (1) the climate in which the process occurs, and (2) the type of material that the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkIMZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">objectOfStateChange</a> is made of. One typical effect of a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViG85wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Weathering</a> is the removal of paint (and other coatings) from the object, through the action of sun, rain, freezing, and wind. weathering FloatingInASubstance floating A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjpjZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhysicalEvent</a>. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwQB24JwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">FloatingInASubstance</a> is an event in which an object floats (is suspended) in a liquid or gaseous substance. A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjpjZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhysicalEvent</a> whose instances include translational or rotational movements of whole objects (see <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkEAZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">MovementEvent</a>), objects changing shape (see <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvp78r5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ShapeChangeEvent</a>), as well as events in which salient parts of an object move or change shape in relation to the reference frame of the whole object. For example, although a ticking grandfather clock is not normally undergoing either a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVkEAZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">MovementEvent</a> or a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvp78r5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">ShapeChangeEvent</a>, it can still be said to be moving -- and thus undergoing a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvjKor5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">MovementOrShapeChangeEvent</a> -- in virtue of the fact that a salient part of the clock, the pendulum, is swinging. (Of course, the pendulum itself is periodically undergoing <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjLCpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Movement_Rotation</a>, and the tip of the pendulum is undergoing a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViOcJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Movement_TranslationEvent</a>.) As a negative example, a catatonic person should not be thought of as undergoing any <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvjKor5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">MovementOrShapeChangeEvent</a>. Although blood moves through such a person's veins, her lungs expand and contract, and so on, these things would not normally be considered salient enough to entail that the person herself was undergoing a movement or shape change event. movement or shape change MovementOrShapeChangeEvent InformationTransferPhysicalEvent physical information transfer A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVifB5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">InformationTransferEvent</a> (q.v.) and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjpjZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhysicalEvent</a> each instance of which involves at least one <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVj27ZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PartiallyTangible</a>, either as its source (see <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvV5PA5wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">informationOrigin</a>), as (at least one of) its destination(s) (see <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVipxZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">informationDestination</a>), or both. (A partially tangible source or destination, note, must pre-exist the transfer event.) Indeed, most if not all actual information transfer events are physical events; but <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvucXhJwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">InformationTransferPhysicalEvent</a> does in principle exclude those such as telepathic communications between disembodied spirits or other <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwQq-QpwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">Agent_Intangible</a>s. humidification The collection of intrinsic state-change processes which increase the concentration of water vapor in some portion of air. HumidifyingAir The collection of all blackouts, which are events in which electricity supply is disrupted. Blackout blackout A collection of events in which an agent evaluates whether or not some condition obtains. For example, checking whether it is raining outside, checking whether the door is locked. Examples of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViQRZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">DeviceRunning</a> include instances of the collections <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViD85wpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">AirplaneTakeOff</a>, #$SkateBoarding, and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rwQCa2pwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">OffRoadMotorcycleRiding</a>. Note that an instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViQRZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">DeviceRunning</a> does not need to be a continuous event. Examples of discontinuous instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvViQRZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">DeviceRunning</a> include the following: the event of all the ignition phases of the firing of a particular automobile's engine during November of 1996; the event in which a particular TV was on and showing a commercial in the year 2001. applying force to an object ApplyingAForce A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/Mx4rvVjpjZwpEbGdrcN5Y29ycA" class="cyc_term">PhysicalEvent</a>.
