Each microtheory (or 'mt') serves to group a set of assertions together that share some common assumptions; the assertions in an mt constitute the content of that mt. Note that each assertion in the Cyc knowledge base must be explicitly stated to be true in at least one microtheory. Assertions stated to be true in one mt will also be true (by inference) in more specialized mts that depend on the content of that mt. For example, if something is true in the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/HumanSocialLifeMt" class="cyc_term">HumanSocialLifeMt</a> (q.v.), then it should by default be true in the more specialized <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/UnitedStatesSocialLifeMt" class="cyc_term">UnitedStatesSocialLifeMt</a> (q.v.). Specialized microtheories are related to the more general microtheories on which they depend by the predicate <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/genlMt" class="cyc_term">genlMt</a> (q.v.). Note that every query is made in some mt, and the answer one gets to a query depends on the mt in which it is asked, since the only assertions which can be used to answer a query in an mt are those explicitly stated to be true in that mt, or in some more general mt. Spindle microtheory systems are useful for organizing a set of contexts having shared assumptions, and requiring an inference context from which all are visible. MonadicMicrotheory monadic microtheory A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/Microtheory" class="cyc_term">Microtheory</a>. <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/ProblemSolvingCntxt" class="cyc_term">ProblemSolvingCntxt</a>s are microtheories that are used to reason about particular situations. Queries posed in <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/ProblemSolvingCntxt" class="cyc_term">ProblemSolvingCntxt</a>s are expected to draw -- via the <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/genlMt" class="cyc_term">genlMt</a> relation -- on a large number of other microtheories. A <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/ProblemSolvingCntxt" class="cyc_term">ProblemSolvingCntxt</a> is usually created for temporary use with a problem at hand, and is discarded after the problem is dealt with. In contrast, a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/GeneralMicrotheory" class="cyc_term">GeneralMicrotheory</a> (q.v.), e.g., is created for lasting use. Specializations of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/ProblemSolvingCntxt" class="cyc_term">ProblemSolvingCntxt</a> include <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/ParsingContext" class="cyc_term">ParsingContext</a> and <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/ScenarioTestingMicrotheory" class="cyc_term">ScenarioTestingMicrotheory</a>. ProblemSolvingCntxt psc need The collection of Microtheories each containing those propositions that describe what some <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/Agent_PartiallyTangible" class="cyc_term">Agent_PartiallyTangible</a> needs to be true. The propositional content of a PIT is not essentially encoded in any particular language, and it may be representable in many languages. PITs are used to represent the informational contents of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/InformationBearingThing" class="cyc_term">InformationBearingThing</a>s. An instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/PropositionalInformationThing" class="cyc_term">PropositionalInformationThing</a> may be something as simple as the information content of a command to stop one's vehicle, expressed in a road sign or in a traffic officer's gesture, or it may be something as complex as the entire contemporary knowledge of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/Mathematics" class="cyc_term">Mathematics</a>, embodied in many and various sources. pit <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/InfoconCriterionMicrotheory" class="cyc_term">InfoconCriterionMicrotheory</a> is the subcollection of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/Microtheory" class="cyc_term">Microtheory</a> whose instances contain GAFs that specify the criteria for going to a specific Infocon level. infocon criterion microtheory InfoconCriterionMicrotheory unit discourse structure UnitDiscourseStructure An instance of this collection is a local discourse context, that is, the smallest unit of context in a discourse. Each new utterance introduces an additional <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/UnitDiscourseStructure" class="cyc_term">UnitDiscourseStructure</a> in a discourse; some parts of utterances have their own UDSs. The main properties of a UDS are represented by the predicates in <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/DiscourseStructureBinaryRole" class="cyc_term">DiscourseStructureBinaryRole</a> (q.v.). Any number of reference-resolving conditions (cf <font color="#ff0000">#$coReferring</font>) may also be asserted in a UDS. DeclarativeContext The collection of all contexts [<a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/Microtheory" class="cyc_term">Microtheory</a>] which assert facts and rules about some world or facet of a world. This is disjoint with <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/PropositionalAttitudeContext" class="cyc_term">PropositionalAttitudeContext</a> which refers to groups of assertions which have the property of having some specific relationship with a sentient beings internal state (beliefs, hopes, goals, questions, etc.). It is necessary, but not sufficient for a context to be a <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/DeclarativeContext" class="cyc_term">DeclarativeContext</a> in order to derive new assertions in it. A <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/SourceMicrotheory" class="cyc_term">SourceMicrotheory</a> or <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/PropositionalInformationThing" class="cyc_term">PropositionalInformationThing</a> contains assertions that are expressly in some source. Assertions that can be derived from those assertions are NOT expressly in such sources and so should not be derived within them, even though they may be instances of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/DeclarativeContext" class="cyc_term">DeclarativeContext</a>. declarative context FocusMicrotheory Mts which focus on a particular thing or type of thing. focus microtheory TimeZoneMicrotheory time zone microtheory This is the collection of all microtheories involved in reasoning about time zones. It was created because it is useful to be able to generalize over all microtheories of this type in making certain assertions. This collection should not be confused with <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/TimeZoneMt" class="cyc_term">TimeZoneMt</a>, which is the microtheory containing the most general rules concerning time zones. ScriptGraphComplianceMicrotheory This collection of microtheories contains microtheories that set out rules for interpreting models of script graphs (see <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/ScriptGraph" class="cyc_term">ScriptGraph</a>) and evaluating alleged instances of these scripts for compliance with this norm. script graph compliance microtheory Cyc planning domain microtheory PlanningDomainMicrotheory A specialization of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/Microtheory" class="cyc_term">Microtheory</a>. Each instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/PlanningDomainMicrotheory" class="cyc_term">PlanningDomainMicrotheory</a> is a microtheory created to store knowledge relevant to performing planning activities. Such a microtheory will act as the main receptacle for any information that is relevant to the planning problem - i.e., background contexts, whether these be general or specific. A collection of microtheories. Each microtheory of this type gives information concerning a graph, GRAPH, that is purported to represent the sequencing rules for instances of some script type, SCRIPTTYPE. i.e., (<a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/relationInstanceAll" class="cyc_term">relationInstanceAll</a> <font color="#ff0000">#$graphRepresents</font> GRAPH SCRIPTTYPE). If MT is an instance of <a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/SubeventSequenceGraphMicrotheory" class="cyc_term">SubeventSequenceGraphMicrotheory</a> then it should define the graph(<a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/PathSystem" class="cyc_term">PathSystem</a>), state all the nodes (<a href="http://sw.opencyc.org/2008/06/10/concept/en/nodeInSystem" class="cyc_term">nodeInSystem</a>), each of which should be script-types and state links between the nodes which represent script types, instances of which may or could be in a <font color="#ff0000">#$followsInProgression</font> relationship during the instances of the SCRIPTTYPE that is being constrained (if we are focussing mainly on the temporal ordering of the subevents). For instance, suppose we define a car safety checking script type (SimpleCarSafetyCheck) and want to define the sequence of events which must occur in any such event.
